Reading Drainage Systems via Camera Vision and AI

Monitoring of Tubing and Collection Vessels in Drainage Systems via Camera Vision and AI

Webpage created 06/06/2024

Commonly-used drainage systems, such as those used in conjunction with chest tubes or in-dwelling urinary catheters, are purely mechanical devices requiring manual reading and entry into medical records, and sometimes even mental calculation. To help with personnel shortages and clinicians with heavy workloads, the Center for Safety, Simulation & Advanced Learning Technologies (CSSALT) team is exploring using camera vision and artificial intelligence (AI) to accurately interpret the readings from drainage systems and use the resulting information to provide context-sensitive instructions, warnings and alarms, and automated entry in medical records.
