Our CSSALT team is working with colleagues from the UF Department of Emergency Medicine to design and build a task trainer to practice managing hemoptysis and hematemesis.
On rare occasions, lung masses or other pathology can cause massive hemorrhage leading to large volumes of blood obstructing the airway.
Since this is a rare event and there are currently no trainers (known to us) on the market to practice managing such an event, an inexperienced health care provider may struggle to adequately care for their patient.
In order to address the need for a trainer to practice managing this event, we have designed a sufficiently realistic simulation task trainer and are currently working on a study to validate it.
